I am planning to do a series of tutorials for absolute DNN beginners, primarily revolving around the stuff you want to do immediately following installation of a new portal.  There is a lot of help on the web about installation and things like that.  However, I haven't really found a great central location for stuff geared toward that phase of DNN that occurs right after you get it installed for the first time.

So, I'm trying to pull together a top 10 of sorts.  Suggestions?  Ideas?  What do you think would fit into the "Top 10" things people need to know how to accomplish right after they first get a DNN portal up and running?

Thanks for your input!  I will use the information from the community to build a useful set of Top 10 Beginner Tutorials.

Re: Tutorials for Beginners

Chad,

1.) Configuration of performance settings
2.) Editing of Scheduler Settings (if needed)
3.) Securing of both admin and host account passwords, and setting user registration type
4.) Disabling DNN copyright credits and updating site copyright
5.) Installing additional modules as needed

Not necessarily in that order, but these are some of the key items that I think are important.

To do after creating a new portal:

- Set your default module settings (eg, setting default Min/Max/None to none, turning of Print option)
- Create two subfolders within the site....one for images and another for files

Re: Tutorials for Beginners

A tutorial about why NOT to use DNN -- mediocre modules; inconsistent module quality; lackluster and slooooooooooooooooow module development; the requirement to use 3rd-party modules to get any kind of decent functionailty; the FCKeditor provider is broken; the blog module has a Jurassic quality and feature set compared to real blogs like WordPress, Movable Type, Blogger even; DNN is all talk and low quality compared to its well-known Linux counterparts (Drupal, Joomla, etc.); all the above topics are also excellent too; most all captchas are now crackable, except maybe Recaptcha.net's captcha.

Re: Tutorials for Beginners

Hi Tom,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I'm not sure I'll include your suggestions, but hey, at least you felt comfortable enough to express yourself. You're right about some of the difficulties surrounding DNN, but every CMS free solution has its problems. I used to complain a lot, but always remind myself that it is free. Free is what you pay, and so certain things go along with that. I have learned quite a bit about various technologies from my experience with DotNetNuke, and I would like to share with the community whatever others may find helpful.

Joomla is not Linux based, so I'm not sure what you mean there. There does seem to be a lot of good stuff going on with Joomla, though! I actually use Joomla in addition to DNN and find that both meet certain customer needs depending on the purposes of the customer. My first installation of Joomla was every bit as frustrating as my first install of DNN. I can do both in my sleep now, but that's because I put time and effort into them.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts!
